Daily Spark: Are You A Liberator or A Tyrant?
"If you create more room for others to contribute, your own ideas will be more influential." - Multipliers, Liz Wiseman
Our Daily Spark today meshes with our current Elevate 10 theme this month on Multipliers and leadership, mainly considering the question to ask yourself, are you being a liberator style of leader?
Liberator leaders are the opposite of tyrant or dictator style leaders, and you may have worked for a tyrant type of manger before, maybe as part of a toxic work culture, as typically toxic environments are sometimes led by tyrants. Liberator leaders are all about their people, focused on their development and growth as well as the ultimate success of the team and their people. Liberators are servant style leaders whereas tyrants are typically more focused on themselves and lead from a place selfishness in most cases. Whereas tyrants can be micro managers and suffocate their people, liberators cast vision and give their teams the latitude to make things happen.
If you worked for both types, you know the difference and we would hazard a guess which you were more effective in. You can also imagine the impact both types of leaders have on the teams and the culture, in particular a lean culture, both good, the bad, and the ugly. But reflect on yourself as a leader. Which type have you been? Which type are you now? What do you want to be? Reflect on how you can become more of a liberator style of leader to be more effective for yourself, your team, and your organization.
Check out the Elevate 10 programming which touches on not only liberators but multiplier style leadership in general. Also check out the book Multipliers by Liz Wiseman, which is a great one.
